Ethiopia prosecutors seek death in opposition case

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Ethiopian prosecutors demanded the death penalty on Monday for 38 opposition officials convicted of trying to overthrow the government, treason and inciting violence.

"Since they have been found guilty on all counts, they should be punished with the highest penalty," prosecutor Abraham Tetemke told the court, which adjourned for a week to consider the demand.

"The accused conspired to overthrow the government. In the process they have created havoc, destroying state and private property. They are also responsible for the deaths of security forces and because of this we request the death penalty."

No one is getting executed. I think Meles means to scare everyone with a death sentence, than "pardon" them to have them jailed for life.

A BBC report says - "Ethiopia Death call surprises US". They thought those fools will never learn the tricks of the trade!

The game is long and complicated. Never trust a serpant. America is surprised not condemn in pretext that negotiation is going. then will be 10 years or life. Meles will pardon during millenium and will reduce their civil rights. The very thing that they are fighting. Then the movie will be effectively over.

One of those reports noted that a woman had to be 'excused' from the courtroom after laughing derisively at the mention of death penalty. I think my reaction was along those lines.

Also thoroughly amused by, "Ethiopia Death call surprises US". I guess they'd to say something ... and oops, 'surprised' it was.
