Racist South Africans and angry Ethiopians
I was speaking to a journalist friend a couple of days ago who had just shut down his pan-African blog. The main reason he stopped writing was because of low reader interaction - he wasn't getting any comments.
Passionate posts about Lords Resistance Army atrocities, Nigerian politics, the rise of the mobile phone, the curse of oil etc. etc. all went up without any response.
There were only two topics guaranteed to get the comments flowing. The problem was the comments were so hostile and mean-spirited that they were worse than having no comments at all.
The topics were racism among white South Africans and anything at all about Ethiopia.

"... and anything at all about Ethiopia." Lol. That is just funny.

Are we really that over-opinionated or perhaps just over-represented in the African diaspora? Or are the comments from non-Ethiopians as well?

I will venture to say Ethio/Erit diasporas cyber community was established earlier than much of that of Africa... with Erit cyber at the lead. This is a matured community we are talking about, and they will comment at anything that touches their issues. The reason, early 90s, we all know what that represents, and the emergency of the internet happened to coincide... when the Eritreans, followed by Ethiopians, flocked to the net to share news and discuss politics. The only African issue in the early 90s that was voluminously discussed on CNN and BBC website was Ethio/Erit related. Sadly, it’s still the same.

it is this type of attitude that stopped us from being colonized by Europeans. We are a crazy people who are crazy about our country.

ethiopians are overly xenophobic and stuck i the past
and when they encounter the world outside of ethiopia
are confused since they are raised with emphasis pon history when that history does not translate to the present they feel threatened somalis have a somewhat similar issue so the conflicts within ethiopia and without i.e eritrea and somalia have all to do with the past - one thing its strike me as paradoxical that eritreans are the only africans who are actually (ok seem to be)proud of the italian colonial heritage
anyway - just a thought no acrimony or antangonism intended

Joe I think you think wrong. On the Italian colonial heritage, if you are not Ethiopian, I think you take the Ethiopian narrative tainted by the current conflict unquestioningly. Other than the art deco of Asmara, there is not much left of Italian heritage--dismantled by the Brits or Ethios. The old generation speaks somewhat some Italian, but not much was passed down. Post colonial events overtook/disrupted much of what may have remained. And you compare Eritreans to other Africans? ok, tell me, how are Eritreans any different than say Kenyans or Sudanese or Somalians? What’s confused for pride, I think, is the implementation of colonial strategy and what that left behind. Eritrean, you may be aware, take pride in these Eritreans who one way or another waged war against Italians: the famous and much sang about Zeria Deres comes to mind, the Eritreans who attempted to assassinate the Italian general in Addis comes to mind, and the many who provided military intelligence to the Ethiopians come to mind. Now the Ethiopians may claim them as Ethiopians, nevertheless, their children are in Eritrea and Eritreans now. For a non Eritrean to say Eritrean have colonial pride is wrong, because I can tell you my family does not, and they lived it.

Dear Safiya,
The fact that you are crazy kept Ethiopia from being colonised, unlike other mentally sain African Nations? And is it because you're stupid that Ethiopia is still amongst the 5 poorest African nations? Stop repeating the same nonsense that has been passed on to your countrymen for generations and generations, and rise above your inferiority complex!
