Ethiopian Survivor

MetiAll of today's newspapers are carrying adverts for 'Survivor Africa' which is - you've guessed it - the first African version of the hit "reality" TV show 'Survivor'. Twelve self-publicists go to a desert island somewhere and get voted off one by one until there is only one etc etc.

The new African version, produced by mnet, broadcast on DSTV, includes an Ethiopian competitor - 27-year-old Metasebiya Yilma - also known as Meti.

The Ethiopian adverts for the series picture Meti in front of the rest of the competitors with the slogan: "Can Ethiopia survive the toughest challenge?"

Unfortunately it looks like the answer is going to be "No it can't". Meti is already back in Ethiopia - she was interviewed in Friday's Sub-Saharan Informer, saying:

I came out a person with great values and much more respect for myself. Now nothing matters that much... Now I would not think that it is a big deal to be hungry. I have started valuing what I have.

Most of the series was filmed in advance. But, Harare's Financial Gazette reports, "filming of the final stages, where the last two contestants battle it out for the prize money, was yet to be done". So it looks like Meti didn't get the US$100,000 prize.

I think you are not a loser. That prize could have
been a nice incentive. Reward always encourage us
and is also a payment for what we achieved. In a world of rivals, prize is one of the way giving people an initiative for further effort. Most of us don't value those things we didn't win. But, those are the most important ones. It prepares us for the future. Sometimes successs in one time is not good. I read people who succeed once fail to repeat that. It happened to few people. We all know about it. A slow progress is always a means of getting popularity. So Metasebiya did a good job. She will repeat this in different places and achieve her goal. Meanwhile she can work hard and prepare herself. She gained enormous experience that give her a moral for similar kind of things she may face in the future. I am very delighted and like to express my feeling for what she did there. It will be an example for her in order to see some weakness and identify the parts she lacks. If Metasebiya reads this, I hope you will understand me. This is not more than commenting a bit after I read the information. I was eagerily waiting for the result when I read you
were going there. As an emerging person, I am sure you will make a significant change and represent our country. There is always a shortage and high need of people who have such interest.

Good luck Meti! You are already a winner by getting there and I hope you will win the 100,000 too. BTW, all contestants are back to thier respective countries together. until the last episode we won't know who the finalists are. I believe Meti is one of the finalists. Go Get It Girl!!!
