Running away

DSC0022That's it. We've had enough of the rainy season. We're off for a few weeks to catch up with folks back home and see some unseasonal sun.

It will be great to get some unfettered access to Ethiopia's Blogspot blogs once again. What they can't tell me, I'll learn online from my daily doses of ENA and Walta.

While I'm away I thought you would like to see the new-look Meskel Square with its brand new video screen near the junction with Debre Zeit road. There seems to be a new ad banner going up every day somewhere on the square. By the time we get back, the whole thing will probably be covered.

The 18-lane junction seems a bit smaller now that it is plastered with ads for Ethiopian Airlines and Sony flat-screen TVs. But at least it means business is booming for someone somewhere. Go to Flickr to see snatch shots of our last drive through Addis.

The phrase "business booming for someone somewhere", the right comment, could be the way Ethiopian economy grows, if any. Nice video screen at the square I never dreamed of!

Sure business is booming for someone somewhere. But it's anarchy on the beauty of the city. The ad banners are erected everywhere, without plan and rhythm and denying the sight for the existing buildings, like the Addis Ababa Museum in this case. Worse, at Mexico Square, the windows of theTegbared (technical school)l has long been enclosed. It is o.k that the city adminstration wishes to generate money but how could they be ssuch irresponsible for the architectural splendor of the city?

I'm still alive, just away from Ethiopia. I've had nothing much to say so I haven't said it.

I really like your blogs; I keep asking my family in Ethiopia to inform me the other side of Ethiopia. I am from Kazanchis Addis Ababa, left in 1991 and after 2 years in Togo have been leaving in London, England. So your work is appreciated, specially your photos.
Cheers Ermiyas
