The Milk House is dead ...

DSC_0040The Milk House is dead. No more chicken chilli dry. No more chicken chilli gravy. No more crispy thin pizzas on round wooden plates. No more hacks and whores and rounds of Bedele Special on Friday nights.

Long live the Milk House whenever it gets round to opening up yet again in a yet another new location, hopefully not too far away from here.

What a nice glitzy new building we're going to get in its place though (see sign).

Damn! No more awesome chechebsa, firfir and incredible pizza. All good things must come to an end but looking forward to Milk House III.

So sad. My brother and I spent too much time here during the 1998 World Cup... if memory serves me correctly, the Netherlands did really well that year, and whenever they were playing the milk House was the place to be.

So where is this place? Born and raised in Addis but have been away for years.

Posted by: Sam at May 4, 2006 5:56 PM

Jeff - that must have been Milk House #1. This one that just closed was Milk House #2 which, Sam, is on the road to Kazanchis, next to the back entrance of the Hilton Hotel (which you can see in the background). There was also Milk House #2 1/2 behind the Mega building on Bole Road which, apparently, is also closing down to make way for a new building. The rumours round town are that the owner has found/been given a new piece of land near Milk House #2. Let's hope so.

Milkhouse is the best place for "shiro" and "firfir"... I frequent it whenever I am in Addis...

Andrew, I feel so dated... 'I remember back when I was kid... we would walk up hill both ways in a snow storm to the milk house for a beer and some football'. Where is the place to hang-out now? I'll be back in country in August or September, and want to sound a bit more informed.

Jeff, I remember getting worked over by the working ladies during the netherlands/brazil game that year, thanks to you. Not to mention the multiple Bedele's (these were the days before the special) and some whiskey. Remember the TV cut out before the shoot-out?

3 choices: go to her house to watch the rest, go home and pass out, or pray the TV came back on. Thank all that the TV came back on.

Nothing like watching the World Cup in Ethiopia. Wish I was there for Germany 06.

Thank you Andrew. The pictures were not showing from my office network otherwise I would have recognized Hilton (Oops I was not supposed to read meskelsquare at work). May be it was blocked by the network for some reason.

So where are all the UN staff and hangers on going to go now?

Hi Andrew,

Do you have any photos of Japanese prime minister, Junichiro Koizumi visit in Ethiopia ? appreciate if you can share it. Thanks

you think!

ye olde milkhouse has swiched three diffrent locations and all three have been demolished to make way for a highrise. coincidence or fate? the last one, the bole milk house was a personal loss. That place had grown on me since my return. the bone fire...the chicken haka… the steamed milk with tea...the friendly waitresses...the pool junkies..

a true shame.
i've been coming and going to addis for a few years now and the MH was always there to greet me (including the constant beating at the pool table).
please inform ASAP of MH3 location + alternative hangouts in the meantime (preferably walking distance to the hilton...).
MH2 will always be in our hearts - long live MH3.

The Milkhouse was becoming a place where Habesha were sitting watching the Ferenji misbehaving with the professionals at the bar. Sweet memories of the MH1 when Wim was still (mis)running it.
There are some alternatives.
Wim has a place near Medane Alem Church called the Holland House. Munich meets Ethiopia at bole near the Friendship building just opposite Novis run by Martin.
Tosa Terara just 100m further then the Milk House around the corner left next to policestation 6, loud music and no ferenji food but close enough to the Hilton, the hookers are across the street.

Andrew,

Can you please verify for us if Ethiopian Review website (http://ethiopianreview.homestead.com/) has been blocked in Addis? It would make a nice entry if you can write about this on your blog.

Thank you!
