An ostrich ate my lunch

DSC0041Q: What do you do if a mad ostrich dashes up while you are having lunch, stabs its huge beak at a bread roll on your plate, then swallows it whole in one big gulp?

A: You accept defeat fairly graciously, retreat to a safe distance, and watch as the bread roll slowly moves down the ostrich's throat (see pic).

The ostrich in question had apparently been brought up from a chick in the compound run by the UN's World Food Programme in Gode in Ethiopia's Somali region. If you are ever passing through, it is definitely the best place to stay in town - unless your contacts are strong enough to get you into the US military compound next door.

Andrew,

Great pics! I viewed every single one - have you had the chance to visit Lake Chancho (crater lake)? Lake Geneva has nothing on it. It is the best. I had planned on a photo-journal during my stay in Addis last year as an instructor at Unity College. Lost my digital camera though.

I enjoy reading your blog. Keep it up.

Hi Andrew,

Happy New Year. I enjoy reading your stories. Aren't you scared of the political crisis?

You should have taken the Ostrich's egg inreturn.

Wait, is that thing on the side of the ostrich's throat your *sandwich"? Oh my god! Andrew, you almost chocked the poor thing.

Andrew,

Either the ostrich swallows real slow, you are pretty quick with that camera...good one!

I wonder if you got a chance to take a picture of the military camp you were talking about? Can you post if you got pictures?
