Where's the politics?

Lots of you have been posting comments and sending emails over the past week or so, wondering why I haven't been writing about the political situation in Ethiopia recently. Rather than responding to each one, I thought it would be easier to write one of those self-referential, 'blogging about blogging' posts to explain everything.

The main reason why I am not writing much about the political situation in Ethiopia right now is that I am not in Ethiopia right now. I am currently in the UK, doing a few family-related things. As I can't see the situation in Addis first hand, I can't really write about it.

Secondly, this isn't really a political blog. I have yet to publish a single political opinion on Meskel Square - beyond the contentious claim that child malnutrition is a bad thing. If you want pro-EPRDF rants, go to the Hmbasha Commentary Page. If you want pro-CUD rants, go just about anywhere else online. If you want badly-spelled entries from an occasionally-employed freelance journalist, stay here.

Finally, if you really think that I am trying to "divert the main critical issue in Ethiopia" by writing about malaria rather than other people's reports of student uprisings, then there is one simple thing you can do. Stop posting comments here and start you own, better blog. You can set up a blog for free - and anonymously - here and here.

Andrew,

I enjoy reading your entries about malaria and malnutrition. But I also value your entries on current events in Ethiopia. Especially because the Hmbashas and the ERs are really not trustworthy. They are too extreme and agenda driven in my view. Because you post, more often than not, from Ethiopia and because you are objective you are the only window that I at least have for getting real news from Ethiopia. But at the end of the day it's your blog...so do the right thing.

You throw the towel.

Andrew,

Please keep doing what you are doing. I don't think you should take the complaints too seriously since they are based on frustration about the current situation in Ethiopia. If people don't like what you are doing, they don't have to come to your site at all. People tend to forget that blogs are simply personal journals.

Your entries have been informative and I for one, will continue to visit regularly.

May the New Year bring peace to us all!

Andrew,

I was, quite, dissapointed on how you decided to refer people to view Hambasha's website for Pro EPRDF news and everywhere else for Pro CUD news. The situation in this country is at a very unstable and dangerous level. If we all have any level of humanity left in this world, we should speak up when Meles Zenawi who is financially sponsored by the West freely kills innocent people today. It is impossible to remain neutral if we have any sense of morality and respect for human life to remain silent when our tax money from the West is going to EPRDF which is terrorizing the Ethiopian people.

Because I stand for humanity and respect human life I will stand by the Ethiopian people in this critical time and voice my opinion and take a clear stand. If we don't then history will not judge us favorable.

We said " never again" to a genocide but one is taking place today in Ethiopia and yet some of us try to remain neutral. How sad?

Happy new year Andrew

Your comments about the meaning and purpuse of blogging in general was clearly explained to those that know nothing other than political writings and commentaries.Eventhough, I donot have a blog of my own as yet,but contemplate to launch one on aspects of Intellectual Property speifically on copyrights. The important message is a blog doesnt always have to be political in focus there are alot of other issues to blog with.keep up your excellent work.

My first time here linked to where's the politics? Sometimes you can't be able to express your feelings in words. I liked your article. We are hearing ear deafening voices from all over. It is really fantastic that some of the people are commenting on your page by refering to the acts of the government as a "genocide".. Have some fairness, you don't stand for humanity neither do you care for human life. You have the political motive beyond anything. It is not bad, however, if you were to commit yourself to a peaceful means of fighting the present government. Any way, Andrew's naturally at this days of "the bloggers" is quite essential as all the acts that we have been wittnesing does nothing to the better of the situation: be it from the government or the opposition, at large.
Thank you "the Meskelean "square""

We have always loved your blog. Our participation is a reflection of that I think. It is not just about politics but because it is comprehensive and broad in perspective. But forget not it is a blog about Ethiopia. If you remember the time after 9/11, there was almost no news across the globe except 9/11. I remember reading an article on the bbc website entitled 'what happened to the other news?'.Some major thing happened in the U.S. and that dominated the whole world and the news every where. There is a major thing going on in Ethiopia and people who love your blog want to hear from your blog about it and I think it is natural and perhaps correct. To give you a good example, let me remind you the story of the coca cola company. Long long time ago, coca cola changed some of its flavour thinking it was doing better but many americans went out against the change - ' you can't change it' - 'this is our coca cola, this is american' - the people were saying this to the coca cola company itself - the very company that gave them coca cola in the first place! The company later restored the original flavour - that means people succeeded in drinking the flavour they wanted. This story may not necessarily fit your blog but the bottom line is at some point you may even not be able to stop your blog even if you want. People would own it and get addicted to it --it starts by people wanting to read what they want - as they/we do now!
I love your blog and my recommendations for you for the new year --the movie--Anger Management--!

I have one massage to someone how did not know the reality. Why these CUD leaders went to take power by force instead of ballot because after 5 years their ages will be 75 to 80 years old that means they will not be fit to be called as MP therefore they are right to try to through the ruling Government the have learned this for their former dictator Mengusto not from their democratic leader Meles Zenawi.
I’m sure all of us will be agree these CUD leaders are the murder of innocent Ethiopian since 1966 E.C. This time is their turn to get the right justice. Please God help them.

--Blogger, I just read - http://www.aigaforum.com/zeru0512.htm. It is funny.
Why doesn't the ethiopian authorities accuse Google for 'treason and genocide' for allowing people to blog their political views so easily! Can't they block google and blogging off the net in ethiopia as the chinese government was doing in china once on google and Altavista? 'Blogging is a devilish act and should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law! Google should be accused for 'genocide' for allowing 'treasonous' people to blog!'. It is a crime punishable by the death penality but personally I prefer prison sentences for googlers and bloggers! It is upto the 'courts' anyway!

Happy New Year!
I wish everyone will have peace, health and prosperity. As we start this New Year let us stand against tyranny and be the voice for the oppressed people around the world. Let us speak-out against dictator leaders in Africa. Question our leaders why is our tax money supporting dictators in Africa. African leaders are becoming more and more multi milliners as the people in Africa are dying of starvation and Aids.

Congrats Mr. heavens for your decision not to stand up for truth and freedom. I am sure you have made eligences with the right people. The people you entrusted with your balls. maybe Ethiopians' regard for you will change when you decide to fetch your balls from the TPLF warehouse.I dont know what you are doing tinkering around in Ethiopia (well ...only because I dont want to presume), but you havent learned a thing about our culture. Telling us off could not be appreciated. We lurk on the internet because Ethiopia is not exactly a heaven for free press. So what if people press you to cover what is critical, what is wrong with that and what other excuse could you have for your self righteous self indulgent response other than 1. your balls are in TPLF warehouse along with your dignity and integrity, 2. You are the ferenji TPLF, or 3. you simply have a rotten personality ..(I mean, how dare these dirty ethiopians ask you to be a bit more objective and lend them a hand in finding the truth...right?)
may you find courage in the new year
your friend Stan

Andrew,
Thank you for providing this blogg. I enjoy reading it and keep up the great job you are doing. In the name of democracy and humanity people have just gone nuts. I managed to wake up after going half way when my friends with different ethnic backgrounds started being accused of this and that. The hate that has flared up between the diaspora Ethiopians is just too much to bear. The extremist have taken over the common man and women.

May GOD give us peacce and harmony

Hi Andrew!
It is really sadening at you are not reporting what is going on in Ethiopia. The so called government is leading the contry in to chaos. And yet at this critical time you tell us you can't do that.It is simply betrayal. If not willing to serve the people now,we don't need you any more.As to the woyanes, the path may be tortous, make no mistake the Ethiopian people will chase you out one day.If you think that you can leave in peace by disintigrating Ethiopia that is a big mistake.tomorrow will show us.

Come on habesha dudeees, after all this is just a blog. We should just be thankful. Variety is the spice is life. We have Uncle Ethiopundit and Uncle Dagmawi for all time matured political analysis. We have Auntie Wechegud for all time political satire and ironic analysis. Other sites and blogs as well for the latest news in Ethiopia! Andy's blog has some different flavour - so be it! Instead, We should be thankful for all the information we are getting for free!

Posted by: Mintesinot at January 2, 2006 5:49 PM

please keep doing what you are doing right now!!!
It is clear that the diaspora and some Cud supporters are always thinking the evil for our country(they are barking here and there like yeabede wessha,Dog)to inturrupt the peace process in the country.we don't want to see them again disturbing the democratization process in our country.now every thing is up for them. They believe that they are the only and the capable to lead Ethiopia. This kind of thinking is buried for once and for all before 14 years.
Please keep writing issues helpful for our people and the democratization proceess in the country.
Merry X-Mas
